From Proto-Germanic *liudiz, from *hโlewdสฐ- (โman, peopleโ). Akin to German Leute, Old Norse lรฝรฐir (โpeopleโ) (whence Icelandic lรฝรฐur), Russian ะปัะดะธ (ljudi).
