From the genus name.

  1. (botany) Any of the genus Lolium of ryegrasses.

Latin

Etymology

Uncertain.[1] Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *leh₂- (imitative root) as the plant was known to stun and cause vertigo. If so, related to lātrō, Ancient Greek λῆρος (lêros), λάλος (lálos), λάσκω (láskō).[2]
