Etymology

Learned borrowing from Ancient Greek ἀλαλάζω ("war-cry, shout aloud), onomatopoeic from the ancient cry 'alala'. Unrelated to αλαλιάζω (alaliázo) and similar words from λαλώ (laló, talk).
