From Old Galician and Old Galician-Portuguese estalar (13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria), from Vulgar Latin *astellare, from Latin astulla, alternative form of assula, from assis (“axis, wheel, axle”). Cognate with Portuguese estalar, Spanish estallar.
