From Old Galician-Portuguese luzir, from Vulgar Latin *lūcīre from Latin lūcēre, present active infinitive of lūceō (“I shine”), from Proto-Italic *loukēō, from the root of lūx (“light”) or from Proto-Indo-European *lowk-eyo-, a verb that is derived from *lewk-.
