From Old Galician-Portuguese ygreja, from Latin ecclēsia (church), from Ancient Greek ἐκκλησία (ekklēsía, congregation). Cognate with Galician igrexa, Catalan església, French église, Italian chiesa Occitan glèisa and Spanish iglesia.
