From Old French Tartaire, from Medieval Latin Tartarus (Tartar, Mongol), from Old Turkic 𐱃𐱃𐰺, spelling influenced by Latin Tartarus (Hell (in Greek mythology)), from Ancient Greek Τάρταρος (Tártaros).
