From Proto-Indo-European *h₁erǵʰ- (mount (sexually), cover, copulate). Cognate to Lithuanian er̃žilas, ar̃žilas (stallion), aržùs (hot-tempered, lustful), Old Norse argr (effeminate), German arg (bad), English eerie.
