From Proto-Indo-European *(s)mer- ‎(to fall into thought, remember, care for). Cognate with *maimrōną ‎(to think, ponder, muse, think out), Latin memor ‎(mindful, thoughtful), Sanskrit स्मरति ‎(smárati, he remembers, recollects).
