From Proto-Indo-European *wer-, *(e)werwǝ- (to close, cover, protect, save, defend). Cognate with Lithuanian verti, atverti (to open, open up), Latin aperiō (open), Sanskrit वृणोति (vṛṇoti, cover, veil, conceal), dialectal Russian верать (veratʹ, stick, insert).
