English[edit]

Adjective[edit]

Xer than thou

  1. (snowclone) Sanctimoniously, self-righteously more X than others.
lefter than thou, radicaler than thou
    • 1972, Religious Humanism:
To be a radical is not be "lefter than thou'" or "more Mao than thou." The genuine radical is hard put to find himself on the political spectrum. For to be radical means to get at the root or origin of a problem; it is to get at fundamentals.
    • 2016, Francis Beckett, What Did The Baby Boomers Ever Do For Us?, Routledge (→ISBN):
In the seventies came a concerted effort on the left to turn that vague feeling into a philosophy. So the broad spirit of vague sixties optimism became a game of 'lefter than thou', with each sect trying to outdo its rivals in radicalism.
