"On a George Best"

[edit]

I have removed the "On a George Best" entry from this article, due to it being libel versus a deceased person; which is in my opinion highly distasteful. --Intimidatedtalk 04:10, 7 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Tasteless, maybe, but libel? The man hardly tried to pretend he wasn't an alcoholic. He drank a lot, usually to the point of extreme drunkenness. This is true, and provably so. Also, saying so will not harm his reputation/future earnings because he is dead. So it is not libel. That something is distasteful does not mean it shouldn't be in an encyclopedia. We're recording, not judging. 13:32, 12 December 2005 (UTC) (Skittle)
Given that such an entry is acceptable for Wikipedia (which I would dispute but not reject), is there any evidence of this phrase being used? --Intimidatedtalk 06:38, 14 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Do we really need this?

[edit]

I thought this page would have more information ... e.g. I dont know, slang terms for mixers or something, but its almost entirely redundant with Thesaurus:drunk. Could we merge the two, preferably to the thesaurus page? This page seems to get relatively few views so I wont be surprised if nobody sees this .... but I dont feel comfortable just doing it outright so I will wait at least a while for a reply. The following information has failed Wiktionary's deletion process (permalink).

It should not be re-entered without careful consideration.

Hi. I wonder if we should delete Appendix:Glossary of drinking slang outright, for being nearly redundant with Thesaurus:drunk and its See also pages . The main benefit of the appendix, perhaps, is that it's easier to edit for new users, who may not be familiar with how to put entries inside a template. Though, I dont use the visual editor, so maybe that isnt true anymore .... also, the Appendix is probably much more difficult to find, so that benefit is of limited use at best. On the Thesaurus page, the template makes every item a link, which means that poorly supported entries will stand out from the rest and be easier to remove. The appendix has some amusing entries that i would be sad to see go, but .... Im imagining English learners trying to pick up the slang all at once and coming up with sentences like "I'm so xylophoned!" and wondering why everyone else in the room is suddenly silent.

I dont know. I perhaps should have waited more time to bring this up, but on the other hand, I see people encouraging others to come to the main discussion pages for things like this rather than just posting them on the talk pages. Thanks, Soap 14:07, 6 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

Agreed. Not to mention that I would normally understand "drinking slang" to mean "slang words related to the activity of drinking," whereas the page seems to consist more or less entirely of synonyms of "drunk." Andrew Sheedy (talk) 21:13, 6 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
