From Old High German ackus, from Proto-Germanic *akwisī, probably from Proto-Indo-European *h₂egʷs-ih₂- (axe), from *h₂eḱ- (sharp, pointed). Compare Low German Ax, Dutch aaks, English axe, Danish økse, Swedish yxa, Icelandic öxi.
