Etymology[edit]

ba (three) +‎ đình (village communal temple), litrally "three communal temples".

This name comes from the Ba Đình Uprising (1886-1887) of three villages: Mậu Thịnh, Thượng Thọ and Mỹ Khê (now in Nga Sơn District, Thanh Hoá Province).
