Etymology[edit]
First attested as bagoloso in 715. Compound of Old Dutch *baka (“spine, ridge”) and lo (“light forest”). The readings of the first element as Proto-Germanic *bagna- (“badger”) or *bakon- (“pork, swine”) are incorrect.
