Etymology[edit]

  • (Overijssel) First attested as prioris Montis sancti Nycolai in dauantria in 1290. Compound of berg (hill, elevated place) and kwartier (quarter, neighbourhood). Named after a sand dune which was the site of a church dedicated to Saint Nicholas.
  • (Utrecht) Compound of berg (hill, elevated place) and kwartier (quarter, neighbourhood). The neighbourhood was named after a nearby hill, the Amersfoortse Berg.
