Proper noun
Bluff
- The southernmost town in the South Island of New Zealand, and seaport for the Southland region.
German
Etymology
From English bluff, perhaps from Dutch bluffen, which is related with German verblüffen. Bluff may be the only word in which the representation of English /ʌ/ by German /œ/, which was formerly common (as it still is in French), has remained to this day. In other borrowings, /ʌ/ is represented by German /a/, or the spelling pronunciation /ʊ/ is used.
