First (16th century) borrowed as brunzo and bronzo from Italian bronzo, later borrowed again from French bronze, from the same Italian word. Further origin uncertain, perhaps from Persian pers. pirinǧ, birinǧ (today berenǧ) "brass", compare Serbocroatian pìrinač "brass" or perhaps from Arabic.
