From Old High German burg, from Proto-Germanic *burgz, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰérǵʰ-s, a form of Proto-Indo-European *bʰerǵʰ- (“fortified elevation”). Compare Dutch burcht, English borough, ‑bury, Danish borg.
