From Ancient Greek καινός ‎(kainós, new) and Rhabditis (the genus of which it was originally believed to be a subgenus), itself from Ancient Greek ῥάβδος ‎(rhábdos, rod) + -ῖτις ‎(-îtis) (feminine form of -ίτης ‎(-ítēs))
