English[edit]
Etymology[edit]
Partial calque of Portuguese Cabo Verde, from cabo (“cape”) + verde (“green”).
Pronunciation[edit]
Proper noun[edit]
Cape Verde
- An archipelago and country in West Africa. Official name: Republic of Cabo Verde.
- 1992, Nixon, Richard, “The Southern Hemisphere”, in Seize the Moment[1], Simon & Schuster, →ISBN, LCCN 91-37743, OCLC 440652941, page 250:
- In the Cape Verde Islands, the electoral victory of Movement for Democracy ushered out sixteen years of one-party rule.
Usage notes[edit]
In October 2013, the government requested that the country be known as Cabo Verde in every language, rather than by partial translations (Cape Verde, Kaap Verde, etc) as had previously been the case. Cabo Verde had already seen some use in English, but continues to be less common than Cape Verde.[1]
