Etymology

From the Greek kapnos (“smoke”) for its dependence on carbon dioxide, which is a large component of smoke. The genus was proposed to distinguish these bacteria from Cytophaga. (Greek kytos, “cell,” and phagein, “eat”), which also exhibit gliding motility.
