Borrowed from Yiddish חבֿר (khaver, friend), from Hebrew חָבֵר. Doublet of Haberer.

  1. honorary title given to a distinguished Jewish scholar who is not a rabbi
  2. friend, comrade (especially as used by Zionist Communists)
