- (Gelderland) First attested as ten broeill in 1494. Derived from dialectal bruil (“soggy overgrown pasture”), a further development from Middle Dutch briel (“fenced woodland or park”). See also Dutch Low Saxon De Bräöl.
- (Groningen) First attested as De Bruil in 1795. Derived from dialectal bruil (“soggy overgrown pasture”). See also Dutch Low Saxon De Brail.
