Dnipropetrovsk Oblast

Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Ukrainian Дніпропетро́вськ (Dnipropetróvsʹk), from Дніпро́ (Dnipró, Dnipro River) + Петро́вський (Petróvsʹkyj), after Soviet revolutionary Grigory Petrovsky. The city was renamed in 2016 as part of general decommunization of placenames but renaming the oblast has not yet occurred because it is mentioned by name in the Ukrainian constitution. Doublet of Dnepropetrovsk, from Russian Днепропетро́вск (Dnepropetróvsk).
