Dutch[edit]

Etymology[edit]

First attested as Eitha around 1050. Derived from Middle Dutch echt (property) (compare achte), used here in a special sense to refer to a forest reserved for the exclusive use of the feudal lord who owned it. Compare Acht, Achterveld and Achtmaal.
