Dutch[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Eck is first attested as in eki in 953. Wiel is first attested as wiele in 1347. Eck is derived from either a term cognate to Old Norse ekja (dirt track, rut left by a wagon) or from Proto-Germanic *agjô- (pointed, tapered). A proposed derivation from eik (oak, Quercus) is impossible. Wiel is derived from wiel (kolk lake).
