From Middle High German ēre, Old High German ēra (“honour, fame, sense of honour”). Cognate with Old Norse eir (“pardon, gentleness”), Old Saxon ēra (“honour, protection, pardon, gift”), Old English ār (“honour, help, pardon”) Latin aes-tumare (“to acknowledge, value”).[1] From Proto-Germanic *aizō.
