[edit]Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Old Galician-Portuguese Estremadura, presumably related to Spanish Extremadura, which is in turn may come from Latin Extrēma Dūriī, alluding to the fact that those regions are located beyond the Douro river. In the case of the Portuguese region, later reinterpreted as being the "extreme" (that is, westernmost region) of mainland Portugal and Europe. It's thus possible then that the ⟨s⟩ could be intrusive or otherwise unetymological (perhaps under the influence of Estrímnio), but, in the abscence of a clear etymology, the same could be said for the alternative ⟨x⟩.
Pronunciation
[edit]- (Brazil) IPA(key): /is.tɾe.maˈdu.ɾɐ/, /es.tɾe.maˈdu.ɾɐ/
- (Rio de Janeiro) IPA(key): /iʃ.tɾe.maˈdu.ɾɐ/, /eʃ.tɾe.maˈdu.ɾɐ/
- (Southern Brazil) IPA(key): /es.tɾe.maˈdu.ɾa/
- Rhymes: -uɾɐ
- Hyphenation: Es‧tre‧ma‧du‧ra
Proper noun
[edit]Estremadura f
- a traditional region in western-central mainland Portugal
- Synonym: Estremadura Portuguesa (rare)
- alternative form of Extremadura (“an autonomous community in western Spain”)
- Synonym: Estremadura Leonesa (rare)
Usage notes
[edit]- Estremadura (with an ⟨s⟩) is favored when referring to the Portuguese region, in contrast with Extremadura (with an ⟨x⟩) which is favored when speaking of the Spanish region.
- The epithet Leonesa may be (rarely) used in speech to distinguish the Spanish region from the Portuguese one.
