Etymology[edit]

First attested as exsell in 1356. Etymology uncertain. Perhaps a compound of Middle Dutch eike (oak, Quercus) and lo (light forest). Another possibility is a compound of either Middle Dutch eike (oak, Quercus) or a personal name and sele (hall house). Compare Hexel and Hooge Hexel.
