German[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Flügel (wing) +‎ Fenster (window)

Pronunciation[edit]

  • (file)

Noun[edit]

Flügelfenster n (strong, genitive Flügelfensters, plural Flügelfenster)

  1. casement window (window with hinges on the side, opening inward or outward)

Usage notes[edit]

  • The word refers to all sorts of casement windows. However, since single-frame casements are the standard in German-speaking Europe, a Flügelfenster is often thought of as being a double-frame or French casement specifically. Sash windows are extremely rare in the region.
