First attested as Fransche Hoeve in 1838-1857. Derived from Frans (French) and hoeve (piece of land of a certain size, farmstead). The name refers to a plot of land where a group of French soldiers camped during the Napoleonic Wars or to a piece of land that had been developed by these soldiers.
