Etymology[edit]

Calque of German Generalgouvernement. Strictly a mistranslation, because German Gouvernement (at least in this context) means governorate, not government.

Proper noun[edit]

the General Government

  1. (historical) an occupation zone established by Nazi Germany in parts of Poland (including areas that are now part of Ukraine)
