     Der Grund, warum sich in die herkömmliche Orthographie des Namens Gilan ein h eingeschoben hat, ist uns nicht klar, wenn es nicht das anlautende Gaumen-g bezeichnen soll; in der zweiten Sylbe dagegen konnten wir weder bei Slaven noch bei Albanesen eine Spur davon entdecken, denn beide sprechen einfach Gilan, doch erfuhr Major Zach, dass bie Bauern es auch Gnilan nennen, was, wenn es kein Calembourg ist, die Bedeutung Kothheim gäbe, und diese könnte nicht zutreffender sein, denn bei einem Ritte durch die Stadt wateten die Pferde oft bis an die Knie in dem schwarzen Sumpfe, welcher hier die Stelle des Pflasters vertritt, und wenigstens den Vortheil gewährt, dass er dem Reisenden die günstigste Idee von der ausserordentlichen Fruchtbarkeit des Bodens aufzwingt, auf dem Gilan liegt.
