Etymology[edit]

First attested as gilisa in 1012-1018. Perhaps derived from an ancient hydronym related to Old Norse gil (gap, ravine). An alternative hypothesis proposes a compound derived from Old Dutch *gîsil (twig, branch) and lo (light forest), but this proposed etymology does not match well with the oldest attestations.
