Etymology[edit]
Named after Nabo Gopal, the son of a local landlord called Ganeshchandra, the grandson of Rani Rashmoni; thus ultimately a bilingual compound of Bengali গোপাল (gōpal, “cowherd”) + Persian گنج (“treasury, store”).
