Etymology

From Middle High German hiute, from Old High German hiutu, hiuto (“today”), a contraction of hiu tagu (literally “(on) this day”), from Proto-Germanic *hiu dagu (“on this day”); similar to other constructions in Old High German (e.g. hiuro < *hiu jāru (“(in) this year”), see Heuer); and cognate with Old Dutch hiudo (> Dutch heden (“today”)), Old Saxon hiudu, hūdigu, hōdigo (> Middle Low German hüde, hüdene (“today”)), Old Frisian hiōda, Old Frisian hiūdega (> West Frisian hjoed (“today”)), Old English hēodæġ (“today”). Compare also Gothic 𐌷𐌹𐌼𐌼𐌰 𐌳𐌰𐌲𐌰 (himma daga, “(on) this day”), Latin hodie (“today”, literally “on this day”), from hōc +‎ diē (literally “on this day”)
