From Middle High German hiute, from Old High German hiutu, hiuto (“today”), a contraction of hiu tagu (literally “(on) this day”), from Proto-Germanic *hiu dagu (“on this day”); similar to other constructions in Old High German (e.g. hiuro < *hiu jāru (“(in) this year”)), see Heuer; and cognate with Old Dutch hiudo (> Dutch heden (“today”)), Old Saxon hiudu, hūdigu, hōdigo (> Middle Low German hüde, hüdene (“today”)), Old Frisian hiōda, hiūdega (> West Frisian hjoed (“today”)), Old English hēodæġ (“today”).
