Etymology

From the New Latin hydrargyrum (mercury), form of hydrargyrus, from Ancient Greek ὑδράργυρος (hudrárguros, quicksilver), from ὕδωρ (húdōr, water) (whence hydro-) + ἄργῠρος (árguros, silver) (cognate to Ag (symbol for silver)). Compare quicksilver.
