Etymology[edit]

Potentially attested as tobbenrode bi gelene in 1280-1290, attested with certainty as hobbelroie in 1447. Compound of Old Dutch Hubbilo (a personal name) (derived from Hugbald or Hubert) and rode (land cleared of trees). Compare Hubbelrath.
