hoch (high) +‎ Kirche (church), referring to a church, which was built on the highest point of that place. First mentioned as Bukewiz (possibly derived from Upper Sorbian buk (beech)) in a 1222 deed issued by Bishop Bruno II of Meißen; the present German name first appeared in 1671.
