[edit]Compound of hof (“court”) + stad (“city”). Named after the Binnenhof, which originally was the seat of the Counts of Holland and now houses the Dutch parliament.

[edit]- (Noord-Brabant) First attested as Hofstad in 1838-1857. Derived from hofstad (“farmstead, homestead”).
- (Utrecht) Derived from the toponym Westrummerhofstad (a former village), a compound of the toponym Westrum (derived in turn from Middle Dutch wester (“western, west-”) and heem (“home, settlement”)) and hovestat (“homestead”). As the neighbourhood is located in the southeast of Houten, it was decided to drop the element Westrummer.
