Etymology

[edit]

First attested as hollic around 1325. Etymology uncertain. Perhaps derived from Middle Dutch hol (low-lying) and wijk (settlement, village). A derivation from hol (hollow) is also possible (compare Old English holc (hollow), Old Norse holkr (pipe, ring), Middle Dutch hulc (type of cargo vessel)).
