(late nineteenth century) Attested circa 1850, composed of Ancient Greek Ἰνδός (Indós) + νῆσος (nêsos, “island”); initially, in competition with Insulinde, of the same meaning, lexically constructed on a Latin basis, or in reference to the East Indies archipelago.
