Dutch[edit]

Etymology[edit]

First attested as Jawnum in 1506. Borrowed from West Frisian Jannum, which may derive from a compound of Old Frisian Iwe (a personal name) and hēm (home, settlement). The first element is unlikely to be Jan, as Christian names were introduced to Frisian in a time when the hēm element was no longer productive in toponyms. Compare Driesum and Hanssum.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ˈjaː.nʏm/
  • Hyphenation: Ja‧num
