Dutch[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Compound of Jood +‎ -en- +‎ vervolging.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ˈjoː.də(n).vɛrˌvɔl.ɣɪŋ/, /ˈjoː.də(n).vərˌvɔl.ɣɪŋ/
  • Hyphenation: Jo‧den‧ver‧vol‧ging

Noun[edit]

Jodenvervolging f (plural Jodenvervolgingen)

  1. persecution of Jews (prescriptively, particularly as an ethnic or cultural group)

Usage notes[edit]

  • The rules of the Dutch official spelling regarding Jood and jood would prescribe Jodenvervolging in relation to persecution of Jews as an ethnic or cultural group and jodenvervolging for persecution as a religious group, although Jodenvervolging is the only spelling recognised in the official list. In practice this implied prescription is not widely followed, not even in recent edited publications.
