Modern (18th century) borrowing from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle Low German kempe, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old Saxon kempio. The revived word existed also in an Upper German form: Middle High German kempfe, from Old High German kempho. Pertaining to Kampf (fight).
