From Proto-Germanic *kidją, *kittīną (goatling, kid), perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *gʰaydn-, *ǵʰaydn- (goat) or Proto-Indo-European *gidʰ- (kid, goatling, little goat). Compare Swedish and Danish kid, English kid, Albanian kedh and kec.
