Etymology[edit]

First attested as urasuagh in 1315. Calque of West Frisian Koartsweagen, derived in turn from a compound of Old Frisian kort (short) and swâg (pasture, place where cattle is kept). The element kort was added to distinguish the settlement from Langezwaag.
