Etymology[edit]

First attested as utresuagh in 1315. Calque of West Frisian Langsweagen, derived in turn from a compound of Old Frisian lang (long) and swâg (pasture, place where cattle is kept). The element lang was added to distinguish the settlement from Kortezwaag.
